The State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), established in the 1950s, is one of the most important in Brazil for its size and performance. According to the Ranking Web of Universities – 2019, UERJ ranks 15th in the country and 23rd in Latin America. The university has several campuses spread over seven cities. Its headquarters are located at the UERJ Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro City. The main numbers of the University are the following: 43,000 students; 2,800 professors; 90 graduations courses; 63 MSc and 46 Ph.D. Programs.
Department of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering (DESMA)
The Department of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering (DESMA) within the Engineering Faculty has a wide range of competencies in water resources and environment and is actively involved in the following programs: Graduate Course in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering; MSc and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering; MSc in Water Resources Regulation and Governance; and Ph.D. in Environment. The water-related research of DESMA ranges from water resources allocation and conflicts to water policy making, including drought and flood risk management, water security, adaptive management to climate change and variability, water governance, participatory management, and source water protection.
